全日本有9492個車站(2019/4月),五百多條新幹線,幾乎到處都可買得到「駅弁 」,也就是我們的鐵路便當,平均價格大多在日幣一千元上下至一千五百元之間,真可說是物美價廉。日本的鐵路便當據傳是1885年7月16日栃木縣「宇都宮駅」,以竹葉包的飯糰和醃黃蘿蔔在車站裡販售開始的,因此7月16日也被訂為「駅弁記念日」。隨著時代改變與市場需求,種類與包裝也愈來愈有創意,成為深具魅力的鐵道文化之一環。每年各地舉辦的「駅弁祭 」集結日本各地數百種駅弁的販售活動經常是人潮洶湧,名款項大多早早被搶購一空,例如:東京車站每年舉辦的的「駅弁屋 祭」,一天賣出超過1萬5000個鐵路便當,而新宿京王百貨店每年舉辦的「元祖有名駅弁與全國美味大會」,集合全國43都道府縣270種駅弁於一堂,短短2周的營業額就高達6億日圓,「駅弁 」廣受平民百姓愛戴的盛況可見一斑。
